Report from A Haitian Missionary

The devastation in Haiti for most of us is incomprehensible, however the Church Of God In Christ International Missions Department responded immediately and mobilized a group to travel and assist in the relief efforts.

Bishop Carlis L. Moody, Sr., President of the International Department of Missions has within his local congregation of Faith Temple in Evanston, Illinois more than 11 nationalities.  Many of these saints are from the Caribbean Islands.  Blessed with people who love God and desire to serve, several of the saints headed to Haiti to assist Bishop Lopez Dautruche, the Jurisdictional Prelate of Haiti.

The group was led by Elder Marx Succes.  Elder Succes is one of the leaders of the outreach ministry, Youth On A Mission.  Youth On A Mission is a summer program founded by  Bishop Moody in 1979 to encourage the Youth of the Church Of God In Christ to get involved in mission work. The ministry is very successful, and for more that 30 years the young and old have traveled to countries to minister. The team provides medical assistance, builds churches and conducts evangelistic crusades.

Elder Succes who is Haitian, was given a leave of absence from his employer, the Department of Education in Illinois and went to Haiti just a few days after the earthquake.  He was in Haiti for almost one month.  Because Haiti is his home, his knowledge is invaluable.  Funds given to Bishop Dautruche by the Church Of God In Christ were used to purchase food, supplies, and given to the pastors of the Church Of God In Christ.

A medical team joined Elder Success on February 15th , and they brought with them medicines and supplies that were so desperately needed.  Team members included, Sister Carmen Watson, RN and a certified Nurse Practioner, Sister Mary Holmes-Johnson, RN, Sister Elaine Brown, CNA, Mary Trowers, CNA, and Minister Jarrel Watson.

The Church Of God In Christ has approximately 150 churches, 42 schools, and one orphanage in Haiti.  Of those churches 21 were completely destroyed, and 25 were damaged but useable.    More than 99 members of the Church Of God In Christ died as a result of the earthquake, and more than 600 were seriously injured.  The orphanage was completely destroyed however, none of our girls were injured and since that time a new facility has been located and the children have been placed and are settled in at the new location.

Bishop Moody black suit_resize_2The Department of Missions, both Home and Foreign, is dedicated to doing missions and promoting evangelism, both personal and congregational throughout the world. The Church Of God In Christ has long been involved in missions and evangelism; and we know, our Lord’s return is soon. It is our objective to encourage every leader and every worker in every church to be aware of the fact that the mission spirit is the necessary force in upbuilding the Church everywhere.
