Process Driven Strategies to Equip Church Leadership

Retaining our Young People in the 21st Century

Pastor C. H. Hollis, Sr.

The teacher’s ultimate purpose should be that of affecting change in an individual’s life through the teaching process.  This has been outlined to us by the word of God which states in:

Ephesians 4:11, 12:

“And he gave some apostles; and some prophets; and some pastors and teachers: For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ”

Matthew 28:19-20:

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.”

Effective teachers for tomorrow’s world are training our children and young people for Christian service today.  We must be diverse, but able to maintain the standard of holy living, be creative, yet promote the doctrines and principles of the Bible.  As teachers we must exemplify a balanced Christian life as an example to those we teach.  To accomplish our goal and be successful at reaching and teaching our precious young people, we must be prepared and trained with strategies and techniques that will have an impact..

*      Are you successfully retaining your young people after graduation?

*      Do your church ministries attract the college crowd?

*      Are your eighteen to twenty-something’s remaining engaged in the ministry, or is there a falling away?

We will be offering Process Driven strategies to address these questions affecting our Boomers, Busters, Gen-X, Gen-Y, plus much more

II.                            Can Sunday School Reach/Teach a Postmodern Culture?

Does Sunday School fit the postmodern mindset? Can it minister to those who believe in nothing on the one hand and in anything on the other? If we are to go into our culture to make disciples, we need to make sure our ministries fit those we want to reach. How do we know if Sunday School will be effective? The answer is: It depends on our willingness to achieve a certain level of professionalism.  We will discuss at length class.

a.       It depends on Our Willingness To Be Authentic

b.      It depends on Our Willingness To Invest in Relationship

c.       It depends on Our Willingness To Move From Knowing to Doing

d.      It depends on Our Willingness To Pray and to Persist

III.                          What should we do in order to reach people in a Post Modern Culture

The Evangelical Movement came into the 20th century with a roar, fighting to defend its core beliefs against modernism and liberal theology, and by the end of the 20th century, the movement was dominated by people who never even mention fundamental doctrines, did not want to fight about them, but was enthralled instead with entertainment and public relations – and almost hostile to biblical preacher and doctrinally-oriented teaching. The believing remnant of the Thoroughly Modern Evangelical Movement faces a serious, two-pronged problem: an untaught church and an increasingly hostile world. During class we will share a strategy that begins with five vital steps.

a.       Remember why we are not modernists

b.      Recover the role of teaching in the church

c.       Re-emphasize the certaintyof revealed truth

d.      Reinstate Holiness on our list of priorities

e.       Regain our true missionary emphasis

IV.                          Modernism vs. Postmodernism

(A Handout will be discussed)

V.                             Ten Commandments for reaching a Postmodern Culture

VI.                          Disciple-making in a 21st Century Postmodern World

The spiritual formation of postmodern people will require the efforts of the entire church rather than being delegated to a department or program. Making disciples (rather than running programs) will have to become what a church does, core reason for its existence.

a.       Emerging Church

b.      Missional Living

c.       Simple Churches

d.      House Churches

e.       Neo-Charismatic Churches

f.        Charismatic Christianity

VII.                       Conclusion

This brief synopsis/outline will be greatly expanded upon during our sessions.

Each category will be expanded and discussed at length.
