Sunday School Teachers play a very important role. They are instrumental in illuminating the scriptures for students. Therefore, it is critical that they understand and appreciate their responsibility in molding and shaping the lives of Saints. This class will serve as a “refresher” course to highlight the basic methods for teaching Sunday School. Since structure is fundamental in learning, we will outline several traits teachers must possess and practice in order to effectively educate students in biblical teaching.
Sunday School teachers must first and foremost be “students of learning” themselves. They should be regular attendees of various services and encourage their students to follow their example. Teachers must be committed to be the vessel God uses to teach and reach the masses.
Teachers must pray, study and prepare for the lessons beforehand. If followed, the outline of the lesson in the Sunday School book will ensure all practical points are presented while allowing space for questions and/or input from both the teacher and students. The use of visual aids and discuss starters can be used to create interaction among students and emphasis important facts. Teachers should be able to discern the student comprehension level and make adjustments as necessary. Most importantly, teachers must keep the lesson “on track”. Although each student should be allowed to express themselves, the teacher should not allow class time to be wasted unnecessarily.
Although the methods presented in this class are basic teaching tools, we are confident they will be beneficial to all Sunday School teachers.
